Fashion Peer Pressure in Teenagers

Teenage is the time of life in which a person is faced with the highest amount of energy, emotions and things that a teenager at that time does not recognize. Not just that but dealing with all this along with studies, family and friends becomes hard for most of the teenagers. There are times when teenagers start doing things that they do not want to or do not even like to do, this is because of peer pressure. They feel that they must do this as this is the “right thing”. One such thing is being a fashion fanatical.
Fashion started off with as something that shows the trend or an idea of what’s in and what out. However, now it has turned into something that must do follow in order to look just right and give just the right impression. When it comes to teenagers, this is the age group that has been affected the most by fashion. Fashion is no longer a trend to this age group; in fact it is a necessity that one must follow, a standard that is to be reached no matter what. If one does not follow fashion then you are not part of the cool crowd. Such teenagers are often labeled as outcastes, nerds or so on. This is when they start wearing what they don’t like, start talking the way other people think is good and start doing everything according to the “style”. Peer pressure makes people do a lot of things, and teenagers do a lot of things in the name of fashion even though it is not right. High schools and universities have been seen to have the fashion that a male must smoke in order to be cool, many start smoking due to this, saying that this is fashion, even though fashion has nothing to do with this.
In such a period where teenagers do not identify their own emotions it is hard for them to deal with fashion peer pressure. Therefore it is necessary that the right steps are taken by parents to make sure that their child does not go out of the way to be known as “fashionable”. Handling fashion peer pressure for teenagers might not be that difficult if they are continuously guided by their parents. There are many kinds of people belonging to different backgrounds and cultures. The kids also dress according to that and are often made fun of. It is important that they are explained that culture is not something to be ashamed of and the latest designer clothes do not make you acceptable and unacceptable. Not just that but money can also be a great factor, all parents are not able to afford high priced clothes, it should be made sure that the child understands the circumstances and not think that that it is unfair for him/her to not get what he/she wants. Encouraging a teenager’s confidence in terms of studies and other thinks is also an indirect way of controlling the peer pressure. Also it should be made sure that the child makes friends who are a good company for him/her. Bad friendship can bring a lot of trouble.
